We thought designing a fashion magazine cover would be different and interesting, and we could take ideas from the many fashion magazines there are available. We thought we could add interesting and eye catching articles because of the subject, and put a modern twist on your everyday college magazine.
We planned our magazine using the convention of 3 colours, red, grey and white, which we thought looked effective as the red contrasts with the subtle grey and white. We situated the photo on the cover to the left, so we could base the coverlines to the right, we thought this looked professional as it is neat and ordered. The masthead is situated at the top, in the same font as the rest of the page only bigger, we made it run along the width of the magazine to stand out. Beneath our masthead we put a slogan in a smaller font and in grey and red. we backed all of our text with shadow to make it look sophisticated.
We added different shapes and symbols (+/*) to make the cover look more interesting and for decoration, i think this looks tasteful and professional, it also appeals to teenagers as it is interesting and breaks the conventions of ordinary magazines. GQ and Nylon magazine both use this technique to break up the page, there covers are where we found inspiration.
On our contents page we kept to our 3 colour scheme and kept the photo's to the right and the contents to the left, this is so we could keep an iconic layout throughout so that the audience can relate and familiarise themselves with the magazine, we also thought it looked professional. We kept the same font although we added more shadow to make the smaller text stand out more. We used the smaller text on less important cover lines, and bigger fonts on the coverlines we wanted to stand out more, so that they were eye catching and to emphasize them. Throughout the magazine we used distabilisation on all of the photos, we also faded them in so that they looked embedded onto the page. We thought this looked very proffesional and made it look smooth and of a high quality.
Throughout the preliminary trial i have learnt how to use the conventions of print in a professional and effective way, I discovered what works well and looks good. I now feel more confident using photoshop and have developed my editting skills. I have also discovered new and different editting techniques, so i feel very comfortable using the program. I have experimented by trying different colour schemes and layouts, this has helped me to understand how the conventions work well which will make a successful design.
